MVME6100 – VMEbus Single Board Computer with PowerPC 601 Processor

In stock

Product Introduction:
The MVME6100 is a next-generation VMEbus single-board computer from General Electric, based on the IBM/Motorola PowerPC 601 RISC processor. It represented a significant leap in performance over the 68040-based MVME2400, offering higher clock speeds, a more efficient RISC architecture, and support for modern operating systems like VxWorks and Solaris. The MVME6100 was used in later GE Mark VI control systems and other high-performance industrial applications where the computational demands exceeded what the 68040 could deliver. The “6100” designation identifies the PowerPC 601-based family.

Technical Specifications:
Board Type: VMEbus Single Board Computer (SBC)
Processor: IBM/Motorola PowerPC 601 @ 50 MHz to 80 MHz
Architecture: 32-bit RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing)
Memory: 8 MB to 64 MB EDO DRAM (expandable to 256 MB)
Cache: 32 KB Instruction Cache + 32 KB Data Cache (on-chip)
VMEbus Interface: VME64 (64-bit data bus, 64-bit address bus)
Floating Point: Integrated 601 FPU (IEEE 754 compliant)
Serial Ports: 2 RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 serial channels (DUART)
Ethernet: On-board 10/100 Mbps Ethernet (Intel 82559 or AMD PCnet)
SCSI: On-board narrow SCSI controller for hard disk and CD-ROM
Graphics: Optional on-board S3 Vision864 graphics controller (2D acceleration)
Operating System: VxWorks, VxWorks 5.x, Solaris, LynxOS
Watchdog: Hardware watchdog with configurable timeout
Power: +5V (5 Amps) and +3.3V (5 Amps) from VMEbackplane
Form Factor: VMEbus Eurocard (6U or 9U height)

Functional Features:
RISC Performance: The PowerPC 601 delivers 2 to 3 times the MIPS performance of the 68040 at the same clock speed, enabling more complex control algorithms and faster scan rates.
On-Board Ethernet: Native 10/100 Mbps Ethernet eliminates the need for a separate Ethernet daughter card, reducing cost and complexity.
SCSI Interface: Built-in SCSI allows direct connection to hard disks, CD-ROMs, and tape drives for data logging and software loading.
VxWorks Support: First-class support for the VxWorks real-time operating system, the industry standard for safety-critical control systems.
PCI Bridge: Some revisions include a PCI bridge, allowing the use of standard PCI cards for additional functionality.
Multi-Processor Support: Supports symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) configurations with a second PowerPC 601 or 604 CPU on a companion board.
